The IDS suspension of 2012 has evolved from the original system to further improve the rider's experience. The new system uses linkage plates that are secured on both sides of the Bottom Bracket shell of the frame, and together with large cartridge bearings that are pressed into the frame's BB shell; this produces a very stiff and reliable main pivot point.

The new arrangement has not added any weight to the design, yet has increased stiffness in the rear suspension configuration. The complete system is laterally rigid, mainly because of this pivot arrangement, and ensures the rider can steer the bike accurately with little deflection in intended path, ensuring accurate handling in all terrains.

The evolution of the design creates a platform with virtually no suspension bob, and is ideally suited to fast cross country and trail riding due to the very efficient suspension travel and supple ride. All suspension parts are replaceable and the system is simple to maintain, again helping the rider to spend time on the trail rather than working on getting the bike to work properly.

- Large main BB pivot is strong, stiff and easy to maintain.
- Laterally stiff one piece rear triangle attaches to large BB pivot.
- Suspension wheel path moves wheel away from oncoming bumps for more comfort and enhances traction under pedal load.
- Initial linear feel with progressive end stroke creating bottomless travel sensation.
- 28-33% sag measurement ensures maximum comfort and pedalling efficiency.

IDS - THE CONCEPT

Silverback Lab designers and engineers have designed a unique dual suspension system optimised for high-performance and challenging mountain biking environments.

This design was driven by a need to identify fresh opportunities, create real solutions and formalise innovative design options. Finally there is the leverage ratio applied to the shock throughout the travel of the suspension.

LEVERAGE RATIO - PROGRESSIVE

This is where the leverage ratio gets higher and higher throughout the travel and exerts more leverage over the rear air shock.

LEVERAGE RATIO - FALLING RATE
As per the name, the leverage ratio falls through the travel and exerts less leverage over the rear air shock.

LEVERAGE RATIO - LINEAR

Again as per name this means the leverage ratio stays the same throughout the travel and is neutral.

We have designed IDS using the first two for the following reasons:

In the first part of the travel we use a progressive leverage ratio to ensure a very smooth and responsive feel by the leverage ratio rising to overpower the rising spring rate of the rear air shock. This gives an almost linear feel to the suspension.

After the first 40mm of travel the leverage swings to a falling leverage ratio, thereby resisting the tendency to over utilize travel or worse yet, to constantly bottom out the suspension in very rough terrain. The result is a very supple initial stage of travel with a later stage that feels like you will never run out of travel in challenging terrain.

OUR CONCEPTUALIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS ENCOMPASSED:

• COMPOSITION
• SCIENTIFIC APPLICATIONS
• UTILISATION OF ADVANCED MATERIALS
• COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
• INTENSIVE RESEARCH ENGINEERING
• ADVANCED DESIGN & MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS
• WEIGHT CONSIDERATION
• PRECISION ENGINEERING
• OVERALL FUNCTIONALITY

THE RESULT : THE INTELLIGENT DESIGN SYSTEM (IDS)

Our revolutionary IDS provides an unparalleled level of agility and enables the weight distribution across the entire wheelbase. This optimises traction and transmission of power over the all types of terrain. Simply put, IDS is technically advanced and technically better.

Silverback's exclusive IDS (Intelligent Design System) is a truly unique engineering feat. IDS includes no superfluous working parts, has superb traction and control, even across the most trying terrain. IDS exhibits all the benefits of small-bump suppleness without any unnecessary energy-sapping bobbing.

In addition, IDS includes a one-piece rear triangle with no pivots near the rear wheel axle. This results in a robust, torsionally stiff rear-end that translates into an energy-efficient performance with noticeable power advantages.

IDS optimises riding stability during acceleration and greater control on single-track. The motion is direct and precise. This superbly tuned suspension and high torsional stiffness, makes a uniquely effective system.
